Three Industry Leaders Unite
to Forge High Density T1/E1 Design Solution
Press Release: May, 1997

Level One Communications, TranSwitch Corporation, and HALO Electronics Provide A Multi-Port Board Design That Will Give OEMs a Leading Edge.
Level One Communications (Nasdaq: LEVL), a leader in silicon connectivity solutions, today announced a powerful new T1/E1 joint design solution with TranSwitch Corporation (Nasdaq: TXCC) of Shelton, Connecticut and HALO Electronics of Redwood City, California.
The design, a four-port T1/E1 line card, includes two Level One LXT332 dual T1/E1 transceivers, one TranSwitch DS-1 (TXC-03102) or E1 (TXC-03104) quad framer, and one HALO TG29-1205NX four-port transformer. Optimized for high-density Telecom/WAN equipment, the design provides four T1 or E1 ports with a total of only four components, in an area of just 4.05 square inches.
Strong Advantages Over Combo Designs
For multi-port line cards, the Level One/TranSwitch/HALO solution presents several advantages. Compared with designs using combos, the dual transceivers and quad framer offer a board space savings of up to 80%. Additionally, the Level One solution does not require external crystals or high-frequency reference clocks, greatly improving electromagnetic interference and noise performance. The design is guaranteed for the full telecom temperature range of -40¡ to +85¡C, required by RBOCs and PTTs. "TranSwitch engineers recommend this Framer/LIU solution because no other design comes close in terms of board real estate savings, ease of manufacturing, and quality of performance," says Francisco Middleton, vice-president of Transmission Products at TranSwitch Corporation. "The top-of-the-line framer and transceiver pairing offered by TranSwitch and Level One runs circles around combo chips currently on the market."
Streamlined Manufacturing
This four-port line card solution offers several manufacturing and inventory benefits. All the devices are available in surface-mount packages, and with the elimination of external quartz crystals, there are no through-hole components. The LXT332 dual transceiver is T1/E1 switchable, reducing component inventory for equipment manufacturers with a global customer base. A single board layout can be deployed for a variety of T1 and E1 systems due to the TranSwitch DS-1 and E1 framer pin compatibility.
According to Jeff Heaton, vice-president of HALO Electronics, "The TG29-1205 NX transformer, when used in conjunction with the Level One LXT332, provides the network designer an extremely cost effective solution as a result of dramatic reduction in component count and real estate. The development of the TG29-1205NX transformer is consistent with our corporate goal of providing our customers with the highest quality solutions at the lowest total cost."
The TG29-1205NX, part of the HALO Quatra series, replaces up to 8 individual isolation transformers while providing excellent crosstalk and template performance.
Excellent Performance Designs using the Level One LXT332 dual T1/E1 transceiver provide world class performance, comply with ANSI and ITU specifications, and offer a full complement of diagnostic capabilities. Unlike other integrated circuit manufacturers, Level One specifies full analog and digital test coverage for all T1/E1 devices. "At Level One, our primary aim is to supply products that allow our customers to win in a highly competitive market," says Dan Cordingley, director of Level One Telecom Products. "We teamed up with two complementary component manufacturers, TranSwitch and HALO, to create an optimal solution for multi-port T1/E1 line cards. This pragmatic approach is part of the Level One commitment to our customers." Level One offers a wide range of technical support, including a reference design note, visualization board, schematics and product data sheets, samples and full applications support.
Pricing and Availability
The LXT332 dual T1/E1 transceiver is priced at $14.97 in quantities of 20K units. Sample requests are processed through local Level One representatives. The HALO TG29-1205NX T1/E1 four-channel transformer is priced at $1.05 per port, when purchased in large quantities. Additional transformers are available for customer specific applications. The TranSwitch quad framers TXC-03104 (E1) and TXC-03102 (DS-1) are priced at $40.00 for 10K units.
